distribution of this species is centred on the Tibetan Plateau; most of the distribution is in China, but the species extends into northern parts of Pakistan, India, Nepal and possibly Bhutan

grasses and short plants, especially feed on forbs (Stipa spp.)

live in small herds; the most stable social unit is mother-foal; males do not permanently tend groups of mares and young but are territorial, and young males often form bachelor groups
